The Mercer Island Bike Skills Area is planned to be launched with an opening ceremony on November 15th at 3:00 PM. It’s hard to believe this day is just around the corner after the journey for this community asset. We hope we get a good weather window to allow some riding of the trails at this opening event. The early forecast looks promising. Info about the opening ceremony by the city is available on the Let’s Talk BSA project page.
As this day approaches it’s a great time for soon-to-be bike area users to review the rules of the trails to support a safe and inclusive start to the bike skills area. MIMBA has shared these recommendations with the Mercer Island Mountain Bike Team and believes the broader community can benefit from these tips.
A printable PDF version of these tips is available for your use. MIMBA encourages parents to review these tips with their kids – and yourself.
A key to keeping on track with the opening was facilitated by a volunteer event the Mercer Island Mountain Bike Team hosted on Saturday, November 4th – yes the day with the torrential rains. Thanks to all the volunteers from the bike team and community who spent the entire day building the large portion of the fence between the BSA and the playground. This project was on the punch list of required tasks to make it to an opening. We had so many volunteers that some progress was also made on re-planting the ferns the team salvaged from the area before construction was started. MIMBA hopes that we can make regular volunteer events available in this area to be part of the solution to maintain the BSA.
